You shouldn’t rush into engraving a watch – especially an expensive one. Kick around a few ideas with friends, gauge public opinion and make a list of possible inscriptions before you drop your watch off at the engravers. Yes it is possible to remove the engraving if it's not too deep. An experienced watchmaker will be able to tell you if they can remove it. Personally I don't mind engravings and think it adds character, history and charm to the watch. In . If they are deep then you have to remove a lot of metal to polish it out. If the engraving is shallow then it is easy to remove without harming the caseback. I recently had Bob Ridley remove an engraving that was shallow and it turned out great.Most Z-serial Rolex watches do not have the inner bezel engraving. Once this is done, the jeweler polishes the item and restores it to a smooth, blank surface. Anything is possible. On a gold-filled case, you'd probably want to de-plate the caseback, solder-fill the engraving, file it all down smooth, and replate. Lot of work though. The engraving in the picture looks very clean and doesn't really detract much from the aesthetics of the watch, so I wouldn't think it's worth the effort.
